Charcoal Forest / Experiments

Literally charcoal is defined as ‘organic that is burned in absence of oxygen’. The left solid matter is called ‘char’, it usually weigh 30~40% of the original organic, while the cooled gas is called ‘tar’, which is the thing that we use to pave the road.

After the initial research of charcoal, I went back to the forest and pick different leaves and branches that are either chop off artificially or naturally. Thinking if the tree trunks are necessarily needed being burned into charcoal, what can I do with the leftovers from the other parts of the tree? Is it possible to also make the leftovers into charcoal? Would it resulted as a ‘Charcoal Forest’?

During the experiments, I built a simple stove and burn these leaves and branches with different forming method. Compare to the tree trunks, because of the smaller scale of the leftovers, it only takes one hour to make them into charcoal. The first trial is pure but stunning, the all-black charcoal enable us to look more into the beautiful forms of the nature world.
